Guidelines for egg donation

Egg donation is offered to women who are infertile. This may, for example, be because the woman entered menopause prematurely or the woman’s eggs are non-functional due to chemotherapy or other disease

Egg donor requirements

  • The egg donor must be maximum 35 years old
  • The egg donor must be physically and mentally healthy
  • The egg donor must not be the mother, sister or daughter of the man
  • There must be no known significant hereditary diseases in the egg donor’s immediate family (parents, siblings and own children). This applies to both physical and mental diseases.
  • The egg donor must have been tested for hepatitis B and C, HIV and syphilis

Guidelines for egg donation

  • Sperm donation is offered to heterosexual couples if the man’s sperm quality is significantly reduced or if there is a high risk of passing on hereditary diseases;
  • Sperm donation is offered to lesbian couples and single women
  • The sperm donor can be ‘anonymous’, ‘open’ or ‘known’. Read more
  • The sperm donor must not be the father or brother of the woman
  • The sperm donor must have been tested for hepatitis B and C, HIV and syphilis

Guidelines for double donation

  • Simultaneous donation of eggs and sperm is permitted in Denmark
  • However, it must be justified by medical reasons
  • At least one of the donors must be ‘open’ or ‘known’. Read more
