ICSI treatment

ICSI stands for ‘Intracytoplasmatic Sperm Injection’ and is also known as IVF with micro-insemination. The procedure takes place under microscope and requires special equipment. We examine whether the egg is mature enough for fertilisation before, by means of the ICSI method, we help a single sperm into the mature egg with a thin pipette. Except for this, ICSI treatment does not differ from IVF treatment.

ICSI is offered in the following cases:

  • Where the man has very poor sperm quality
  • If the sperm has been aspirated from the testicles (TESA)
  • Where very few or no eggs have been fertilised by IVF in previous attempts

Freezing of eggs

If there are suitable fertilised eggs which are not to be transferred to the uterus, you may choose to have them frozen so that you can use them later on, if your treatment does not result in pregnancy or if you want to have more children. This means that you avoid hormone therapy and egg retrieval in connection with your next attempt.

The course of ICSI treatment

If you are to start ICSI treatment, you can follow either a short or long protocol depending on which hormone therapy the doctor finds is best for you. Short protocol treatment is provided within the same menstrual cycle, whereas long protocol treatment stretches over approximately seven weeks.
